EAS Newsletter #8 - Summer 2023

News from the European Aligner Society in an EASy to digest format

It is a couple of months since over 1,000 orthodontically-focused colleagues and companies were together in Turin, Italy, for the fourth EAS congress and this issue celebrates the best attended EAS event in our history. This is a chance for members to relive the highlights of the Congress and for those who sadly couldn’t join us, to read all about it (and make a diary date to attend next year’s event in Valencia).

In this issue we also congratulate, the recipients of the first EBAO awards which were announced at the Congress, learn about EAS’ call for greater sustainability in the clear aligner sector, and hear from one of our much-appreciated event sponsors DentalMonitoring.

A DEFINING MILESTONE FOR THE SOCIETY

Our fourth European Aligner Society Congress, held between 11th - 13th May at the Centro Congressi Lingotto in Turin, marked a defining milestone for the EAS - it was the best attended event the Society has staged by some margin. The Congress was attended by 1,095 delegates from 67 countries and was supported by twenty-two companies who presented their products and services.

EAS President Dr Tommaso Castroflorio and EAS Scientific Chairman Dr Francesco Garino gave the opening addresses and talked about the progress made in the development of aligner technology since the Society’s inception, and how this has changed the lives of millions of people around the world. They explained that EAS members represent more than 67 countries and were justifiably very happy with the high attendance at this fourth congress, compared with just over 300 participants at EAS’s first congress in Vienna in Austria in 2016.

SUSTAINABILITY

At start of the Congress the Dr Castroflorio invited attendees to download the United Nations’ AWorld app, which was developed to encourage living in a more sustainable way in a modern world, with less paper and less plastic. It was created in support of ActNow - the United Nations campaign for individual action on climate change and sustainability.

EUROPEAN BOARD OF ALIGNER ORTHODONTICS, FIRST AWARDS LAUD CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

Established in order to promote clinical excellence, EAS’s European Board of Aligner Orthodontics (EBAO) announced four honorary members of EAS and the EBAO at the 4th Congress; Drs Robert Boyd, the first to introduce new technology for aligners; Dr Giovan Battista Garino, the first to introduce cases treated with aligner orthodontics to the Angle Society of Europe; Dr Giuseppe Siciliani, a former director of the University of Ferrara in Italy, the first European school to introduce aligner orthodontics to the curriculum for residents; and Dr Ravindra Nanda for his pursuit of advancing orthodontics.

HEADING TOWARDS VALENCIA IN 2024

At the conclusion of the event it was announced that the fifth EAS Congress will take place in Valencia in Spain on 29 February,1 and 2 March 2024 and registration for this will open in on October 1st 2023. Valencia is a ‘must visit’ Spanish destination - a city of contrasts with a charming old town next to heart-stopping futuristic buildings.

UPDATE FROM OUR PARTNER DENTAL MONITORING

DentalMonitoring introduced the very first AI-powered remote monitoring software known to orthodontics, redefining the way doctors treat and communicate with patients. This technology acts as an orthodontic assistant, providing doctors with greater clinical control in order to elevate care standards, grow their practice and give patients a more convenient treatment experience.
